Before Construction
Traditional Culverts in Charleston

Picture
Undersized crossings restrict natural stream flow, causing severe problems including scouring and erosion, high flow velocity, clogging, and ponding

Picture
Clogging and barriers have further long-lasting effects on natural resources by:
-degrading stream water quality
-alters natural dispersal patterns of fish & wildlife

This road in Charleston would wash out at least once a year. 5 Stream crossings were restored in Charleston in Summer of 2020 with our Box Culvert and Bridge kits.

During / After Construction

Our Box Culvert was designed to:
  • Span the stream.
  • Set at the correct elevation.
  • Slope matching the stream.
  • Stream bottom of natural materials.

Our Stream crossings benefit-
Fish & Wildlife: Allows ease of movement through their natural habitat.
People: Roads are safe from washout and reduces costs.

WABI Reports:  Oil Spill Settlement Funds Stream Crossing Upgrades

CHARLESTON, Maine (WABI) - ”The value of each of these crossings is astronomical for a small town.” said Terri-Lynn Hall, chair of the selectboard for the town of Charleston....

Dirigo Timberlands Company, based in Madison, was hired to construct and install the crossings, providing work to more than 20 people. Blaine Miller was on site coordinating the work.

"Our company builds approximately seventy or eighty of these types of structures a year."

Work started last week and is on track to wrap up next week. The structures are expected to last up to 100 years.

“Not only do you get an infrastructure upgrade you get an ecological upgrade along with it.” he said.
